The CTF Intramural Open

Jeff Ford, CTF Director of Operations

The CrossFit Open is a worldwide CrossFit competition. We do it every year. It’s fun. It brings our community together. Any one of you who participated last year could never forget the first ever “One Team Hug.” It was Epic with a big-E. There’s pictures to prove it. Something not even you could have predicted.

Last year, we launched the first ever CTF Intramural Open, some athletes competing for the first time and others taking the next step in their training. Every Saturday, we learned just how incredible competition can be amongst our friends. The environment was crazy supportive, it was darn near spooky.

Speaking for the CTF Staff, we expected it. We knew how AWESOME you guys would be.  We know how blessed we’re to  Coach each of you. Our goal at CTF is to always live life to its fullest, to make everything outside the gym better. This has been a guiding principle since we opened.

Like last year, we’re ready to bring the team together. We’re excited to have new and old athletes (old meaning you’ve been at CTF for some time) get back out there and compete. No matter your age or level we know you can do it.  Competition, believe it or not, helps: the pressure to perform pushes you to train harder; the social boost of dozens of your best friends cheering for you will help you reach a higher plane. Heck, watching your teammates GO is inspiring. Free of anxiety you’ll be amongst the same great group of people!

In 2015, we have a few slight changes. One we’ll be working with the amazing crew from 843 CrossFit in Bluffton. Two we’re changing the divisions around since CF HQ implemented the awesome idea of scaling!

We’re going to keep the four intramural teams competing. And you’re still going to be on one of them.

The Four Intramural teams don’t have names yet. But their Captains have been chosen:
Team #1: Anne Lawless
Team #2: Matt Wilhite
Team #3: Karla Williams
Team #4: David Chesworth

We want you to sign up again this year; maybe even go outside your comfort zone and sign up for a new level that’s different than last year. You’re ready. Don’t doubt yourself. We have your back.

Registration for the Open is already LIVE!. If you are competing at RX’D (meaning you do a majority of your workouts at CTF in Level 3, Prescribed or Advanced): Sign Up Here. Choose CrossFit Hilton Head as your Affiliate.

CrossFit HQ heard how much fun we we were having last year and created a SCALED Division. If you are competing SCALED (meaning you do a majority of your workouts at CTF in Level 3, 2 or even 1) Sign Up Here. Same process as RX’D, but when you submit your workouts each week you will have the option to choose SCALED still select CrossFit Hilton Head as your affiliate.

Just like last year, CTF WILL BE PROVIDING AN ADDITIONAL OPTION THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE OPEN. (That’s right! AS PROMISED, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU WILL BE ABLE TO DO THIS!) There will be a NO BARBELL Division for those of you just making the leap to the competition setting or are just fine and dandy without a barbell in your mitts. IF YOU’RE COMPETING IN THE NO BARBELL DIVISION, SIGN UP AT THE CTF LINK PROVIDED HERE.

Pssst… if you’re not sure at which level you should compete, ask a coach!

ALL CTF Army athletes from ALL DIVISIONS will be ‘drafted’ onto an Intramural team this year. RX’D athletes won’t lose their spot on our Regional team, and their points will still count toward our Affiliate score worldwide. There will be even distribution of athletes from all divisions on each team.

Team Captains will rotate draws, and then notify the athletes of their team. The ‘Draft Party’ will take place the week before the Open on Friday, Feb 21st at 645pm at Porter and Pig. We encourage you to come out and enjoy the kickoff!

+1 Point – Attendance: every member of a team that completes an Open workout each week earns one point. Maximum one point per athlete per workout.

+1 Point – 1st place in each division: every male AND female member who places first in their division at CTF for each workout gets an extra point for their team. There will be a first place point available each week for Male/Female RX’d, Scaled, No Barbell, and Teen Divisions. (8 Total Points)

+5 Points (team) – Spirit: The team with the most noise, pride, and PRESENCE each week will receive 5 bonus points. Note: there will be an only ONE opening ceremony on the first week this year. We underestimated how amazing you guys would with your opening spirit every week last year, but to relieve anxiety and due to time we will only have ONE opening ceremony. Your spirit points will be up for grabs based off criteria that will be announced in a blog post before game day. Look out for, Five Ways to Be an Awesome Teammate coming to a blog post near you.

+3 Points (bonus) – Athlete of the Day. This will be awarded to the CTF athlete who represents the most grit, determination, joy, sportsmanship, technique and inspirational performance on competition day.

In 2015, athletes competing in the Open will have only four days to complete each workout. This year you will have TWO opportunties to get judged on the Open workouts in a group setting filled with supportive athletes. The Open will take place on Saturdays from 9:30am to 12pm on CTF home turf. There will be NO Saturday 8am group class, 9am Yoga or 10am Primal in the month of March as we prep the gym for The Open.

In addition to Saturday’s, our friends at 843 CrossFit in Bluffton have opened their doors to have ANY of you who cannot attend on Saturday’s, join them from 5pm to 8pm on Friday’s.

We will have an Open Gym time between 8:00am and 9:30am on Saturdays. The Open will have five workouts. This first workout will be released on Thursday, February 26th. The last on Thursday, March 26th.

Like last year, if you cannot make Saturday’s group Open time, you can schedule a test time with another athlete from your team. Score sheets will be provided at the front desk.

The top team will earn a spot in the CTF Intramural Open legacy. Details will be released soon on exactly what that means! Stay tuned, think big. Our focus is on FUN. We want participation because it will make you fitter, and it will get you high-fives and you’ll be happy and love life more and glow and stuff. Just like you did last year!

RX’D, SCALED and TEEN competitors, register online at the CrossFit Games site, and let’s start this party!

NO BARBELL division, here’s your home, you got this!

Coach’s Note: A VERY SPECIAL thanks to Chris Cooper and Catalyst Fitness.  This great idea started with them last year! Thanks Chris and Catalyst!
